“Into whatsoever houses I enter, I will enter to help the sick.”  Brother, husband, father, teacher, author, grand and great grandfather, Dr. Joseph Dominick Pahlow, who passed away on the morning of 17 January, was first and foremost a physician.  A brilliant diagnostician and a caring, compassionate doctor who always treated his patients, not their diseases.

Born in 1924, “the little kid from Vandergrift,” Pennsylvania worked countless jobs to put himself through school in Pittsburg; Washington, DC; Bologna, Italy; and New York City to learn the art and science of medicine and win the highest commendations from all of his American and European professors.

When not in the hospital or the office, he was known for bursting into Italian arias of his own devise, consistently knocking early in Gin Rummy, buying an Edsel, listening to Rambling with Gambling, making his own wine (good for cleaning rings), hitting off his back foot in golf, and claiming his children owned stock in the electric company (something about too many lights on all the time.)

Called Joe by his beloved wife; daddy by his only daughter; dad by his three sons; pop-pop by his seven grandchildren and one great grandchild; and Dave once in his life (a long story); he was best known simply as Doc to his patients, friends and the residents of The Pines at Whiting, where he spent his final years.

Doctor Joseph Pahlow took care of everyone, but best of all – he took care of us, his family. And we are thankful.

A Memorial Gathering for the Doc will be held at Riggs Funeral Home, 130 North Main Street (Route 9), Forked River, New Jersey 08731 on Tuesday, January 22nd, 2019 from 10AM until the time of service at 11:30AM.

Darlene Marie Buckholz.  I want everyone to know that I earned my wings on January 15, 2018. I was given the gift of life 54 years ago and now it’s time to give it back. I was a lucky girl who led a wonderful existence and for this I am grateful. I had a terrific mom, Elizabeth Buckholz from Forked River, who’s still around and a dad, Gerard, who I was really mad at when he beat me to heaven in 2016.  They spoiled me with a loving home, my own room with premium cable, and tons of family vacations throughout my lifetime. I was truly treated like a diva! I’m also leaving behind my older brother Tom Buckholz of Jackson, who was my protector and the best big brother. He also has a wife, Thomie Buckholz, and four girls, Lyndi, Lacee, Haylee, and Kolbi who I totally adored. You know, I never missed one of their dance recitals, now that’s love! I also leave behind my younger sister, Geri-Lynn Van Sant, and her husband, Buddy Van Sant of Forked River. I was always the perfect and willing playmate for her when we were kids and we always had so much fun! Her husband was my favorite brother-in-law (and my only! I won’t tell him that). I also leave behind tons of friends and relatives, but I must give a special shout out to my Aunt Marilyn, who was my best “girlfriend” from the day I was born. Aside from my contagious charm, I exceled as an athlete and received many gold medals in Special Olympics in swimming, bowling, basketball and track. I was a legend. I bragged about myself to all my friends when I attended the ARC of Ocean County. I’m really hoping heaven has happy hours, restaurants, and stores because I really enjoyed going to them. Everyone at Caffrey’s, Captain’s Inn, Lacey Diner, and Lacey Shop-Rite always made a huge fuss over me every time I graced them with my presence! My Dad and I look forward to food shopping together again in heaven. It was one of our favorite things to do together. Although, I can now come clean that every time Dad and I would go food shopping we’d buy a Hershey’s bar, eat it in the car, and dad would hide the wrappers in his pocket from my mom. Whew! Glad that’s finally off my chest! I’m thankful to all the people in my life and I was happy to have given so much unconditional love to all of you. I know you will all miss me, but if you want to say goodbye and tell me how great I was one final time, visitation hours will be Wednesday, January 17th from 3-7pm and again on Thursday from 9:30am until time of Celebration at 10am at Riggs Funeral Home, 130 North Main Street in Forked River. Interment will be at St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery in Lakewood.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1966, served as a weatherman in vietnam, and was honorably discharged in 1970. He earned his bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1979. It was there that he met Vilma Elaine Genova, who he married in 1980. Frank was generally a reserved man who enjoyed time with his family and close friends. He had a Soft spot for all the animals in his life. Aside from various dogs and cats, he and his wife took care of a raccoon kits on two occasiona and he even once comforted a skunk that was hit by a car. He could replace any part on a car, rewire a furance, build a deck from the ground up or completely reroof a house. We will miss him dearly, but Frank would not want us to mourn for him. As with all things in life, he was very practical about death and understood that it comes for us all in the end. “To all of those that think of me, Be happy as I go out to sea. If others wonder why I’m missin’, Just tell ‘em I’ve gone fishin’” -Dalmar Pepper
